Youth Councillors
District of Elkford Youth Councillor Program
Are you passionate about community involvement? Eager to represent your peers on municipal council? Make Your Voice Heard. Help Shape Elkford's Future.
Every year, the District of Elkford seeks two enthusiastic and self-motivated youth representatives to attend meetings and events and provide a voice for the youth of our community.
The District of Elkford Youth Councillor Program provides local youth with a unique opportunity to learn about municipal government, develop leadership skills, and represent the interests and perspectives of young people in our community. Each year, Council appoints one Senior Youth Councillor and one Junior Youth Councillor to help strengthen communication between Council and Elkford's youth while increasing awareness and understanding of local government. As a Youth Councillor, you'll gain firsthand experience in how local decisions are made, participate in meaningful discussions about community issues, and contribute ideas that help shape the future of Elkford.
As representatives of the District of Elkford, Youth Councillors may attend public meetings, events, ceremonies, and community activities. Photographs and videos may be taken at these events and used by the District in publications, reports, presentations, social media, the District website, and other public communications materials.

Why Become a Youth Councillor?
As a Youth Councillor, you'll gain valuable firsthand experience in local government while developing leadership, public speaking, and communication skills that will benefit you well into the future. Youth Councillors attend Council meetings, District events, and regional activities, giving them a unique opportunity to learn how municipal decisions are made and how they impact the community. Working alongside elected officials, District staff, and community leaders, Youth Councillors represent the voice of Elkford's youth, participate in the Youth Action Network Commission, and help strengthen connections between Council and young people. It's an opportunity to build confidence, gain meaningful experience, and make a positive difference in your community.
Senior Youth Councillor Opportunities
The District sponsors the Senior Youth Councillor to attend the B.C. Youth Parliament Session in Victoria, providing an exceptional opportunity to connect with youth leaders from across the province and gain a deeper understanding of government and civic engagement. Senior Youth Councillors may also be eligible for a $1,000 post-secondary scholarship upon successful completion of their term and fulfillment of scholarship requirements.

Youth Councillors are appointed annually and serve from the time of appointment until the last day of school in June, as determined by the school district. This volunteer role requires a commitment to representing Elkford's youth, supporting communication between Council and youth, and actively participating in meetings and events throughout the term.
