2022 General Local Elections

 
Local government elections are held every four years, and the next one is right around the corner! General voting day for the 2022 General Local Elections is Saturday, October 15, 2022.

Citizens of the District of Elkford will be electing:

  • One Mayor
  • Six Councillors
  • One School Trustee for School District #5

All elected officials will serve a four-year term that runs from November 2022 to October 2026.

Running in the Election

Our elected officials are entrusted with making decisions that directly affect the daily lives of every resident and business in our community. They are responsible for contributing to the betterment of our local government, providing leadership and both serving and acting on behalf of all citizens of Elkford. They play a critical role in keeping our community vibrant, healthy and successful, both socially and economically.

Candidate Eligibility

You are qualified to be nominated, elected and to hold office as a member of local government if you meet ALL the following criteria:

  • Canadian citizen;
  • 18 years of age or older on election day;
  • Resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed; and
  • Not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment, or by law, from voting in an election or from being nominated for, being elected to, or holding office.

Nomination Packages

Nomination packages are available for pick up as of August 2, 2022, in person, at the District of Elkford Municipal Office at 744 Fording Drive during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays).

Packages are also available by email for any candidates who wish to view or print their own documents. For an email package, please contact the Deputy Chief Election Officer, Chantel Dawson, at cdawson@elkford.ca.

Completed packages will be accepted ONLY during the Nomination Period, which takes place from Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at 9 a.m. to Friday, September 9, 2022, at 4 p.m., BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Candidates are required to book an appointment with Chantel Dawson, Deputy Chief Election Officer, by calling 250.865.4005 or emailing cdawson@elkford.ca.

  • November 7, 2022: Inaugural Council Meeting (open to the public)
  • November 8, 2022 (tentative): Council Orientation (only for those elected to council)

Voting in the Election

Why should you vote? Your municipality determines how your tax dollars are allocated and provides the day-to-day services you count on, such as fire rescue and emergency services, water and sewer, snow clearing, bylaw enforcement, parks, trails and recreational facilities. By voting for the candidate(s) who best align with your ideals and values to represent you, you are partaking in the democratic process and directly influencing the health, future and success of your local government and community. Your vote matters!

What about voting for school trustees? Among other important responsibilities, trustees decide how best to meet the needs of local students by maintaining and building schools, hiring the teachers and staff required to keep them running smoothly and authorizing the allocation of funds for educational initiatives and programs.

Voter Eligibility

Who Can Vote?

To vote in the District of Elkford, you must meet all the following requirements:

  • District of Elkford Resident Electors
  • 18 years of age or older on the day of voting;
  • Canadian citizen;
  • Resident of the District of Elkford on the day of voting;
  • Resident of British Columbia for at least six months prior to voting day (April 14 for General Voting Day); and
  • Not disqualified under the Local Government Act, or any other enactment, or by law from voting in a local election.

Non-Resident Property Electors:

  • 18 years of age or older on the day of voting;
  • Canadian citizen;
  • Resident of British Columbia for at least six months prior to voting day;
  • Not disqualified under the Local Government Act, or any other enactment, or by law from voting in a local election;
  • Registered owner of real property in the District of Elkford for at least 30 days immediately before the day of voting;
  • Not registered as a resident elector; and
  • Not disqualified under the Local Government Act, or any other enactment, or by law from voting in a local election.

Advanced Voting Opportunities: Council Chambers in the Elkford Municipal Office (744 Fording Drive)

  • October 5, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • October 11, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

General Voting Day: Elkford Community Conference Centre (750 Fording Drive)

  • October 15, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mail Ballot Voting:

  • In 2021, legislation was updated that allows all electors to vote by mail if authorized by bylaw. Council adopted Election Bylaw No. 868, 2022, which includes provisions for voting by mail.
  • Eligible resident and non-resident electors are allowed to vote by mail.

  • Before 4:30 p.m. on October 13, 2022, you must submit the following information to the Deputy Chief Election Officer’s office in person at the District of Elkford Office—744 Fording Drive, by mail to P.O. Box 340, Elkford, B.C. V0B 1H0, by telephone to 250.865.4005, by fax to 250.865.4001 or by email to cdawson@elkford.ca:

    • Full name;

    • Residential address;

    • Address of the property in relation to which you are voting (for non-resident property electors);

  • Method of delivery of your mail ballot package:

    • Pick up at District Office in Elkford and, if you wish, name of person you authorize to pick up package for you, OR

    • Regular letter mail through Canada Post to residential address, OR

    • Regular letter mail through Canada Post to an alternate address that you provide when requesting the ballot package.

  • To ensure you receive the correct registration application form in your package, you must indicate whether you are going to be registering as a resident or non-resident property elector.

Mail ballot packages will be sent out commencing on or about September 26, 2022. To be counted, your mail ballot must be received by the Deputy Chief Election Officer in Elkford no later than 8 p.m. on October 15, 2022.
