The project is part of Elkford’s ongoing FireSmart™ and wildfire risk-reduction initiatives. The District has contracted Nupqu Resource Limited of Cranbrook to carry out the work. Current activities include site reconnaissance, mapping, boundary marking, danger-tree assessment and falling.
A 50-metre no-burn buffer has been established around private properties bordering the treatment area. Within this buffer, all debris will be chipped and hauled to the Sparwood Transfer Station for disposal. Burn piles will only be created and burned when venting conditions allow.
The project will continue throughout the winter, with completion expected by spring 2026, before wildfire season begins.
This work is fully funded by a Union of BC Municipalities grant through the Community Resiliency Investment Program, following priorities identified in the District of Elkford’s 2025 Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan.
Note that for safety reasons, residents are asked to stay clear of active work areas. Nupqu will post signage wherever work is taking place.
